BEIJING 2008:Greek president visits 'Bird's Nest'
/noticias.info/ Accompanied by Liu Qi, president of BOCOG, Greek President Karolos Papoulias visited the main stadium of the Beijing Olympic Games on Tuesday.
The Greek leader scaled the stadium's stands, walked on the competition grounds, and received updates from Liu. Built with a total of 42,000 tons of steel, the 91,000-seat venue will host the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, athletics and football competitions.
Papoulias, a former high jumper, was brought to the site for high jumping. Looking around the stadium, also called the "Bird's Nest" because of its unique grid-like shape, he expressed hope that Olympians from around the world would achieve good results in this splendid venue.
The visitors posed for a group photo on the western side of the project. Liu presented a metal model of the National Aquatics Center, also called the "Water Cube," to the visiting president.
Joining Papoulias on the tour were Greek Minister of Employment and Social Protection Palli-Petralia Fani, Minister of Justice Sotiris Hadjigakis, Greek ambassador to China Michael Cambanis, Chinese ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and Vice-Mayor of Beijing Chen Gang. notas_de_prensa_archivo
