LIVERPOOL FC: ON THIS DAY: JUNE 24, 1967
Bill Shankly swooped to sign one of the finest goalkeepers in the history of Liverpool Football Club on this day in 1967.
/noticias.info/ The Reds boss paid Scunthorpe just £18,000 for the services of Ray Clemence, a fee that would prove to be an absolute bargain in the years to come as 'Clem' went on to make 665 appearances for the club.
After two years as understudy to Tommy Lawrence he finally broke into the starting line-up where he would remain until he ended a 14-year association with the club by joining Tottenham Hotspurs in May 1981.
During his time at Anfield Clemence won a plethora of trophies including five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, a League Cup and a UEFA Super Cup.
Elsehwere on this day in LFC history Michael Owen played his final England international as a Liverpool player as Sven Goran Eriksson's side were beaten by host nation Portugal at Euro 2004.
The diminutive striker marked it in typical style by opening the scoring early on, but the day would ultimately end in disappointment with Portugal progressing courtesy of a 6-5 win on penalties after the match finished 2-2 after extra-time.
Liverpoolfc.tv would also like to take the opportunity to wish a happy birthday to former Reds star Luis Garcia, who is 30 today. notas_de_prensa_archivo
