US ELECTIONS 08: BARACK OBAMA: Blog: Unite for Change: Fellows' Experiences

/noticias.info/ The Obama Organizing Fellows are working in 17 states to help organize communities and grassroots leaders for the general election. In addition to voter registration, they are working to create Unite for Change events. They are an active part of the over 3,000 events that will be held on Saturday.

Here are some of their experiences…

Marta from Missouri:

My experience as an Organizing Fellow has been exhilarating. Before this week experience, I had no idea how much I enjoy talking and listening to people. Like when I spoke to one of my one-on-ones, expressing concern for the floods we are experiencing in the Midwest, and found to my surprise that she, Rachel, is an environmental scientist, deeply concerned about the climate challenges we are facing, and eager to make a difference and volunteer for Barack Obama for President Campaign.

I did not have to convince her. I did not have to persuade her. I simply asked: "Would you like to host a [Unite for Change] house meeting to recruit volunteers?" The answer was a rotund "Yes.”

So assertive that I felt the impact - the impact of generations wanting to act, generations who want to make their voices heard, and generations whose hope for the future Barack Obama for President represents. I found that I felt more energized as I left Rachel's house than when I arrived.

I felt that, having spent over 10 hours that day in organizing, having driven all over town that day to schedule my house meetings, was all worth it, plenty worth it. I felt that we are needed. We are making a difference.

Christopher from New Jersey:

I had a one-on-one with a 56-year-old female Obama supporter who is a foster care mom in Princeton. After sharing my experience as an immigrant who balanced school, work and family, we had one thing in common. That we had found inspiration in Senator's story of how ordinary people can overcome adversity.

We felt more energized at the end of the meeting than when we started dicussing the importance of this year's election in the context of our individual life experiences. She accepted to host a Unite for Change meeting on June 28. We've been working the list of participants to fill her living room for more exchanges.

Meagan from Virginia:

One of my hosts for the Unite for Change house parties is an older man, 70 to be exact, and I found him through phone banking after a very long and unsuccessful day of voter registration. He was so enthusiastic and immediately understood the purpose of the house parties even before my explanation. He completely brightened up my day!

Steven from California:

I was just sitting at Starbucks with my Obama '08 button pinned on my shirt when a couple approached me to ask if I work with the campaign. We proceeded to have the most intellectual and engaging conversation I've had in a while. We shared our stories, why we support Senator Obama, and discussed political issues and life in general.

By the end of our conversation, I had them so excited about the Unite for Change house parties happening on June 28th that we went over all the details right then and there and exchanged contact information. It just goes to show how this movement is bringing the best out in people and giving them a reason to come together at times they otherwise wouldn't.

Saturday is going to mark a day of unity within the Democratic Party -- bringing people together to discuss issues, get ready for a tough fight in November and meet other supporters in communities across this country. It's not something you are going to want to miss. notas_de_prensa_archivo
