Steven Gerrard recovered from his Euro 2008 exit heartache to inspire Liverpool to an impressive win over Newcastle United.

Booed by the Toon Army, Gerrard soon silenced them with a net busting free-kick for the opening goal. The captain then turned provider when he set up goals for Dirk Kuyt and substitute Ryan Babel.

Fernando Torres could have scored three or four himself but every time he was denied by Shay Given who, despite conceding three goals, had an unbelievable match.

After being silenced by Gerrard the Newcastle supporters vented their frustrations out on under fire manager Sam Allardyce. Rafael Benitez, who swapped his suit for a club tracksuit, stood and admired his team's performance from the bench.
