UNITED : Champions: March 2008
In-form United took maximum points from five league matches this month, with the high point a win over local rivals Liverpool.
/noticias.info/ In February's review we noted that you don’t get six wins from six league games in the same month, because life’s not quite that perfect. But winning all five in a month? No problem at all.
United managed it for the second time in 2007/08 in March – without conceding a single goal – to take back top spot from the fading Gunners.
A 3-0 win at Craven Cottage, in which Owen Hargreaves scored his first goal for United, was secured without Vidic, Giggs, Ronaldo or Rooney in the starting line-up, yet United had an easier game than they would get from Fulham’s relegation rivals Derby two weeks later.
A 1-0 win at Pride Park was only secured with a 75th-minute Ronaldo finish, before another two goals from him secured an easy victory over Bolton at home.
Most United fans had one eye on the next league fixture, however – the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford. You knew Rafa Benitez’s boys would love nothing more than to deprive their old rivals of a home win, but in truth they never even got close.Wes Brown chose a great day to get only his third goal for United, by heading home a Rooney cross, before Mascherano got his marching orders for Liverpool after going postal at the ref.
Goals from Ronny and Nani late on sealed the victory, and there was a sense that the Reds were on a roll when the team cruised past Aston Villa 4-0 the following weekend.
One man in particular was in wonderful form, as the Goal of the Month panel confirms.
Sir Alex Says:
In the Aston Villa matchday programme, the Reds' boss said: "The win over Liverpool was good for us, but the title race will go to the wire. We play Chelsea and Arsenal next month: crucial games." notas_de_prensa_archivo
