LIVERPOOL FC: RUSH TARGETS MASTERS TRIUMPH
Ian Rush is desperate to help Liverpool's legends end their barren run without a trophy when they take part in the Merseyside Masters tonight.
/noticias.info/ The club's all-time leading goalscorer is relishing the chance to face the likes of Everton and Tranmere in the brand new Echo Arena and hopes to take a huge step towards ending his side's six-year barren spell without silverware by winning the regional tournament.
"It's the first one at the Echo Arena which will be great," said Rush.
"As it's ourselves, Everton, Tranmere and Wigan involved in the Mersey stage we should get a good crowd there.
"That's what it's all about, playing for the fans.
"We've always done well in the regional stages, it's just when you get to the finals that we've struggled a little bit in recent years."
The Reds' former players took the Masters tournament by storm when it first got underway, notching up back-to-back triumphs in 2001 and 2002. But since then they have struggled to make their class count and have not reached the national finals for two years.
It is a run of form that disappointed Rush, who puts his side's difficulties down to the increasing number of younger players getting involved in the competition.
"It's getting a little bit harder for us older guys coming up against players who are still fully fit," he smiles.
"A lot of the teams are getting younger and younger now. Some teams like Leicester and Rangers have included lads who are still playing for clubs. That says a lot.
"We should have a decent enough side though."
Liverpool's squad for tonight's Merseyside Masters: Bob Bolder, Nigel Spackman, John Wark, Phil Babb, Jan Molby, Mike Marsh, Paul Walsh, John Durnin, Ian Rush. notas_de_prensa_archivo
