COE:Council of Europe Secretary General and Russian President: Discussion on pan-European co-operation on Human Rights and the Rule of Law
/noticias.info/ Moscow, 1 July 2008 – At their meeting today, President Dmitryi Medvedev and Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis discussed the role of Russia in the pan–European architecture, the reform of the European Court of Human Rights and the current priorities of the Council of Europe, which include the fight against terrorism, intercultural dialogue and trafficking in human beings.
“Russia has been a member of the Council of Europe for 12 years and I believe that the membership has brought benefits to Russia as well as to the rest of Europe. In the Council of Europe we are not in the business of giving lectures, we are here to help all our member states to meet our standards of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Russia has complied with many of its accession commitments and I hope for rapid progress on the remaining ones, starting with the transformation of the moratorium on executions into the abolition of the death penalty by law” said Terry Davis after the meeting.
