ARSENAL: Clichy Week: See Gael's game of the season
/noticias.info/ It's Clichy Week on Arsenal.com as we celebrate the player who claimed second spot in our official Player of the Season poll. Here, we select Clichy's game of the season.
April's trip to Old Trafford is not one Arsenal fans will want to dwell on. After all, that 2-1 defeat against Manchester United effectively ended the Gunners' interest in the Premier League title race.
However, once you cut through the obvious disappointment of that day, there are positives to take from the performance. Arsenal created chance after chance in the first half against United and should have led long before Emmanuel Adebayor nodded them in front just after the break.
The game turned in the space of 60 seconds, the time it took Rio Ferdinand to narrowly avoid a spectacular own goal and William Gallas to concede a penalty with a handball. Ronaldo's conversion, and Owen Hargreaves' free-kick, gave United the advantage.
Arsenal's failure to hold on to a hard-earned lead against their major rivals ultimately cost them the points - and the title - but the character they showed as they chased a second equaliser hinted at a bright future for Arsène Wenger's young side. And no one epitomised that spirit and determination more than Gael Clichy.
The French left-back produced a virtuoso display, performing his defensive duties with aplomb and surging forward at every opportunity. As the final seconds ticked away at Old Trafford, Clichy even popped up on the right and in midfield, as if he was taking United on by himself. It was further evidence of the 22-year-old's character and class.
"He has hit many people [in France] with his display at Old Trafford recently," said Wenger afterwards. "It was a top class performance, not only football-wise but character-wise. He showed a non-acceptance of the defeat when we were down 2-1. He was the one who really moved us forward.
“And there’s still more in there. I am very positive with Gael because he loves the game and, every day after training, he’s out there practising to improve."
