WIMBLEDON: Nadal delighted with 'amazing' win

/noticias.info/ Over the past two weeks Rafael Nadal has had a number of evening matches, culminating in very late press conferences. Tonight, the clock had ticked past 10.35pm when the 22-year-old emerged for his post-match interview but the bleary-eyed journalists let him off, engaging in a rousing round of applause when the new men’s singles champion stepped in the room.

As ever, Rafa was graceful, polite and appreciative as he took his seat. Smiling he said his victory was impossible to describe but was a dream come true. “I’m just very happy. It’s unbelievable for me to have a title here at Wimbledon. When I was a kid I, dreamt of playing here but to win is amazing.”

However, Rafa would not be drawn on whether the victory meant more to him than winning his four French Open titles: “When I won for the first time the French Open was unbelievable too. I don’t want to compare the Grand Slams but Wimbledon is special for everybody. Tradition and everything.

“Its more a surprise to win here than the French,” he said.

His thrilling four hour 48 minute 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7 victory over defending champion Federer ended in gloomy conditions on court. “In the last game, I didn’t see nothing. I thought we would have to stop. Well, if I lost the last game we would have to stop, that’s for sure.”

It could have been wrapped up a lot earlier in the day, when Rafa established a two sets lead but Roger Federer clawed the match back. The Swiss saved Nadal’s two Championship points in the fourth set tie-break and went on to force the decider. The Spaniard was pleased he remained mentally strong, despite the match going into a fifth set.

“When I lost the fourth set I was sitting down and just said well I am playing well, I am doing well. I am with a very good positive attitude, so gonna continue like this and wait.

"I am very happy I played with a very positive attitude all the time, fighting a lot. So a win here is unbelievable for me.”

The number two seed shared words with five-time Wimbledon champion Federer as they shook hands after the conclusion of match.

“I just say, Good tournament. Sorry. Because I know how tough it is to lose a final like this. This is tougher than last year and last year I was very disappointed in the end.

“He is a great champion. His attitude always is positive when he loses, when he wins. Always accepts the victories and the losses with the same humilty.

“I always have a lot of respect for him. I admire him a lot. At the same time I am very happy for me but sorry for him. Because he deserves his title too.” notas_de_prensa_archivo
