LIVERPOOL FC: ON THIS DAY: JULY 6, 1992
Graeme Souness swooped to sign one of the most promising goalkeepers in England when David James made the move from Watford to Liverpool on this day in 1992.
/noticias.info/ The stopper was tipped to be the long-term successor to the legendary Bruce Grobbelaar and on arriving at Anfield he vowed to become both Liverpool and England's number one within two years.
It did not quite work out that way and although he did manage to displace Brucie within that time period, some inconsistent performances meant he would have to wait another five years before representing his country at senior level.
He went on to make 277 appearances for the Reds during a seven-year spell at Anfield before moving to Aston Villa in the summer of 1999.
He has since gone on to establish himself as one of the finest keepers in the Premier League and recently reflected on the mistakes he made during his Anfield career.
"I have taken stock of what I am about," he said in 2004.
"The problem in the past was that everything was taken for granted. A lot of people believed I was capable of becoming England's number one and I took it for granted that I was going to do that without having to do the hard stuff which was working at it.
"The worst point was the 'Calamity James' time of my career when I was 26-27 and I was trying to equate how I would be able to get back into the England team. The move to Aston Villa was the right move at the right time." notas_de_prensa_archivo
