FORMULA 1: FERNANDO ALONSO: Alonso sixth at British GP

Race without mistakes of Fernando in Silverstone.

/noticias.info/ Under an insistent rain it was ran, as expected, the British GP. The downpour was intermittent and in a part of the race the water whirlwind was really strong. In the first pit stop the Renault team decided not to change the tyres as there were forecasts the rain would stop. So, the tyres would become more and more
slick and the car would go even better. But it happened the contrary, it rained again and added a considerable delay and despite he was the unique driver not going off the track he finished just sixth.

Many rivals took advantage of the moment the rain was heavy, around lap 22º, to overcome him. Later he decided stop again in order not to lose more time, and put new tyres. When he returned to the track he was 10º and began to recover. When those going ahead stopped, Fernando climbed to the fourth position but due he used during much time the intermediate tyres, they degraded and made him suffer in the final instances. He resisted as much as he could the attacks of Kovalainen and Raikkonen until he lost the battle. Finally, he arrived sixth. He told us:

“It was a difficult race due to the changeable conditions that demanded a different tyres. I had not to make any mistake if I wanted to score. I risked too much in races like Monaco and Montreal and I didn’t get good results so today at least I can say I didn’t go out.”

“It was a matter of bad luck what happened to us because when it rains anything can happen. In the first stop the team thought there will not rain more and it was decided keeping the same tyres which were almost slicked. If rain would not return, they were good enough, but five minutes later water fell again and we had to do another stop to change again the tyres. But if it had rained ten minutes later, I could even be the leader of the race.”

“If I had changed tyres in that moment it was an easy podium as Heidfeld went out after me when he stopped and it would not be difficult to remain there, so seeing that Heidfeld finished second, that second position was ours. But if didn’t rain we could even win.”

“The battle in the last laps was difficult because in those laps I had again the tyres slicked due to the use and I was going very quick in some parts where the track was dry and very bad where it was wet.” notas_de_prensa_archivo
