A crowd of 25,000 attended the WTCC event in Estoril, loudly rooting for local hero Tiago Monteiro who repaid them with a dominant win in the second race.
The Portuguese weekend that closed the first half of the season turned in favour of SEAT, as the Spanish brand obtained two victories and stretched their leading margin in the Manufacturers' Championship.
In the first race Rickard Rydell beat Chevrolet's pole sitter Nicola Larini at the start to claim a lights to flag win, becoming the tenth victorious driver in the twelve races held so far.
The second race saw BMW Team Italy-Spain's Félix Porteiro trying to resist Monteiro's charge. Supported by the fans' cheers, the Portuguese driver put a lot of pressure on the young Spaniard until he managed to take the lead for good. Together with his SEAT Sport team-mate Gabriele Tarquini, Monteiro is the only driver who was capable to win two races so far.
The championship is now heading to Brands Hatch, where the second half of the season will start on July 27th with rounds 13 and 14.
SEAT Sport men are still in control of the Drivers' Championship, with Tarquini (58 points), Yvan Muller (57) and Rydell (48) filling the top three places. However, the title fight is far from being limited to them, as BMW's Andy Priaulx is lying in fourth position, having reduced his gap to 15 points, while Robert Huff of Chevrolet is fifth, a further 7 points adrift.
And they both are looking forward to their home event with the aim to close in further. notas_de_prensa_archivo
