FORMULA 1 - RENAULT: Hockenheim, Friday: Let the action begin
/noticias.info/ The first free practice session for the German Grand Prix is just around the corner...
The action gets underway shortly with the first free practice session for the German Grand Prix. It's still quite damp and overcast here with a few spots of rain falling on the way to the track this morning, and the forecast suggests there will be scattered showers in the region over the course of the day.
Despite the cool weather, it's certainly nice to be back in Hockenheim as this is one of the classic venues for Formula 1 racing, even though the track no longer includes those long, flat out blasts through the forest. Still, the revised circuit has retained a lot of that character, especially with the back straight which provides an ideal slipstreaming opportunity. And the German fans are very enthusiastic and passionate about their motor racing.
Everything went well yesterday as the team made its final preparations to the cars. And there was also a bit of fun at the end of the day as Lucas and Sakon put their helmets on and gave some high-speed taxi rides to lucky members of the public with a lap of the circuit in a Magane RS. Several other drivers were also taking part as chauffeurs: Kubica, Klien, Fisico and Sutil to name a few. It was a nice event and much appreciated by all those who got to see the talents of a Formula 1 driver up close.
Both Fernando and Nelson are looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the R28 to see how the car feels compared to last week at the test. Fernando was happy with the work completed last week and felt that the team had really improved the handling of the R28. So most of the hard work has already been completed and the three hours of free practice available today will allow the team to complete their final set-up adjustments and tyre evaluation work.
As Fernando was saying yesterday, the priority this weekend is to continue racking up the points so that the team can begin to improve its position in the championship. It's a close fight with Red Bull, Toyota and Williams, and we're in the thick of that battle. Chasing down fourth place is what everybody in the team is focussed on doing. And let's remember that the German Grand Prix marks the half-way point in the season - there is still an awful long way to go in the championship and time for the team to convert its potential into strong results.
So let's see how things shake out during the first free practice session. The drivers have just had their morning briefing with the engineers and are now preparing for action. Follow proceedings on the blog today with session summaries and updates during the day. notas_de_prensa_archivo
