GOLF: PGA: Open Champion sets ‘exclusive’ goals
/noticias.info/ Padraig Harrington has revealed he is seeking membership to golf's 'exclusive' clubs after becoming a multiple major winner.
His triumph at Royal Birkdale, which saw him become the first European in more than 100 years to retain the Open Championship, has already thrust him to a career-high of third in the world - behind Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
And having now doubled his major haul in the space of 12 months, the 36-year-old has set himself new targets having elevated his status.
"Winning my first major was incredible and my goal then was to win another one," he said. "I'm thrilled it's come so quickly but I have to look forward.
"There are some exclusive clubs in golf I am going to focus on joining. Three majors first, also a different major."
The Irishman has already joined one elite band as he is only the seventh European player in the modern era to have won two or more majors, following Tony Jacklin (two), Seve Ballesteros (five), Sandy Lyle (two), Nick Faldo (six), Bernhard Langer (two) and Jose Maria Olazabal (two).
Should he claim a third he would draw level with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh in a worldwide context.
By joining that trio, Harrington is already in good company as one of only six players to have won more than one major since Woods won his first one in 1997, the others being Mark O'Meara and Retief Goosen.
"There are loads of levels to move up to, and I must keep pushing on," said Harrington.
"No matter whether I succeed or not, you need clear and attainable goals to retain the intensity." notas_de_prensa_archivo
