BEIJING 2008:Building a green Beijing
/noticias.info/ Beijing's greening and beautification plan was initiated with the goal of building Beijing into "an ecological city with fresh air, nice environment and friendly ecology," said Wang Sumei, vice director of the Beijing Landscape Forestation Bureau (General Office of the Capital Forestation Commission), at a press conference on Tuesday.
The groundwork for the plan was aimed at simultaneous development of the economy and the society, with special consideration to the city's sustainability, she said.
Although winning the bid to play host to the Olympics has accelerated the rate of greenification, greening programs have long been a part of the general planning of the city. A goal was set in 2000 to increase the green coverage to 55 percent by 2020.
Green coverage has gone from 36 percent in 2000 to 43 percent (40,000 hectares) at present, and public green space per capita increased from 9.66 square meters to the present 12.6 square meters.
Over the past seven years, the amount of green space in Beijing has increased by 10,000 hectares, including 22,710,000 more trees and 46,530,000 additional square meters of lawn. Some 100 roads have been greened each year since 2001. There are now 12,600 hectares of green separation around the city, and central areas have seen 20 new large green spaces and 700 small green spaces every year from 2001 to 2007.
In addition, 700 residential areas and one million square meters of rooftop have been greened.
