Neil Mellor emulated Roy of the Rovers as he struck a 90th minute winner to sink Arsenal at Anfield.

The Gunners had gone a season unbeaten away from home in the Premier League and this game was seen as a real test of the Reds' credentials.

Xabi Alonso scored a brilliant goal to give Rafael Benitez's side the lead after great work from Steven Gerrard and Liverpool played some terrific football on the day.

Arsenal showed their class when Patrick Vieira netted an equaliser in the 57th minute but the Reds and Mellor were to have the final say.

With time almost up Mellor hit an unstoppable shot beyond the reach of Jens Lehmann to send the Kop wild with delight.

"It is a moment that will never leave me and I will never forget the roar of the Kop when the ball went into the net," said Mellor.

"It's fantastic how many people still talk to me about this goal. I just remember going up for a little header with Vieira and then the ball came back to me and I just hit it. Fortunately for me it went into the back of the net. It was a fantastic atmosphere and there is nothing like the crowd at Anfield."
