NEW ZEALAND 2008: Canada qualify, USA crowned

USA were crowned winners of the 2008 CONCACAF Women's U-17 Championship after defeating Costa Rica 4-1 in the final at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday evening.

Four goals in the first half: a brace from Tani Costa, plus strikes from Kristen Mewis and Courtney Verloo ensured that there was no way back for the Ticos, who grabbed a 73rd minute consolation through Katherine Alvarado.

"When we got together as a team some months ago, we basically all agreed that our first goal was to get to the World Cup and our second goal was to win the CONCACAF region, this tournament," said USA coach Kazbek Tambi. "Now we're going to set some new goals when we get back home to lead into the World Cup."

The two teams had already qualified for the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in New Zealand, but in the night's earlier match, Tiffany Cameron's first-half goal was enough to see Canada defeat Mexico and book the final spot for the October/November tournament.

As champions of the confederation, the US will be in Group C, along with France, Japan and Paraguay, while Canada and Costa Rica will placed in a draw which takes place at the Home of FIFA on Monday to see which team will be placed in Group A and Group B respectively. notas_de_prensa_archivo
