GOLF: PGA: Clark Looks To Continue Success

/noticias.info/ Midland Region Order of Merit hopeful Cameron Clark is hopeful he can top an already successful season by winning the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open PGA Championship, which starts on August 5.

The Moor Hall professional has been in fine form this summer, winning the Warwickshire County Golf Championship and the first Order of Merit competition of the season.

Having played professionally full-time for six years on the European Tour and in the USA, Clark is no stranger to tough competition and is relishing coming up against a high-quality field at Royal St David's.

"Yeah I've had a good season," he said. "I've been playing pretty solid and I'm second in the Midlands Order of Merit and won the county championship so it's been good.

"I'm really looking forward to heading up to Wales and putting in a strong performance at the Welsh Open."

The 34-year-old now combines playing competitions with working full-time at Moor Hall and, while he finds the summer is very busy, it is a mixture he enjoys.

"I've played quite a few competitions this season but I don't play a huge amount of pro-am golf these days - maybe half a dozen a year - because it's so busy at the club.

"I feel like I miss out a bit on practice time and it does keep me very busy being away and then coming back to the shop but I enjoy that combination.

"If you have to earn your living just from playing there is so much more pressure to perform week in, week out and I'm happy to combine teaching and playing these days."

Another Midlands player struggling to find time to compete is Daniel Francis, of Ludlow Golf Club. Despite it not being a great season he is still confident of doing well in Wales and says he has been inspired watching Padraig Harrington's triumph at the Open.

"I haven't been playing a great deal," said Francis. "It's been a quiet season in terms of competing because I've been devoting most of my time to the club and to teaching.

"It's difficult to do that and find time to play tournaments.

"I didn't get through the regional qualifying for the Open which was disappointing. As a player, the Open certainly gets the juices flowing and inspires you when you see it on television.

"I've been putting in quite a bit of practice at the club recently so I'm hopeful I'll make the cut at Royal St David's and I'm reasonably optimistic about doing well."
