GOLF: SOUTHERN AFRICA TOUR: Nationwide Tour top-10s for De Jonge and Mulroy

/noticias.info/ Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge and South Africa's Garth Mulroy both cruised to a top-10 finish at the Nationwide Tour’s Children's Hospital Invitational on Sunday.

De Jonge had to pull out all the stops after three bogeys in a row before the turn, but the burly Zimbabwean grinded to a final round 73 to secure a share of third, two shots off the pace from winner Bill Lunde.

Mulroy rallied in tough conditions and the gusting wind at the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University in Columbus, improving half-a-dozen spots to tie for sixth with a final round 71.

With the top-25 players on the Final Money List automatically advancing to the 2009 PGA Tour, De Jonge’s fourth top-10 this season launched him to 14th from 23rd - more or less assuring him of a PGA Tour card for next season. Meanwhile Sunshine Tour number two Mulroy, with two top-10s and five top-25 finishes to his credit, launched from 70th to 57th in the rankings.

Lunde, who took a year off in 2006 to give him the desire to come back and play again, cruised to his first Nationwide Tour victory to deny Dustin Bray by one shot.

Final result from the Children's Hospital Invitational:
279 Bill Lunde USA 67-72-67-73
281 Brendon de Jonge ZIM 70-69-69-73 (T3)
282 Garth Mulroy 71-73-67-71 (T6)

PGA TOUR
Chez Reavie won the Canadian Championship on Sunday for his first PGA TOUR title, closing with a one-under-par 70 in near-perfect conditions for a three-stroke victory over Billy Mayfair. At five-foot-9 American, the short-hitter was on the mark in the wire-to-wire win at rain-softened Glen Abbey, hitting 44 of 56 fairways and 54 of 72 greens in regulation. The accurate play was a big factor, with the players allowed to use preferred lies in the fairways all four days. Playing for the sixth straight week, Reavie finished at 17-under 267. He earned $900,000 and spots in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship the next two weeks along with the 2009 Masters.

Final result from the Canadian Championship:
267Chez Reavie USA 65-64-68-70
279 Retief Goosen 73-68-65-73 (T30)

Missed cut (set at 142):
144 Brenden Pappas 72-72

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR
Michael McGeady continued his native Ireland’s extraordinary run of golfing success this season with his maiden Challenge Tour victory at the SWALEC Wales Challenge.

On the back of Padraig Harrington’s recent Open Championship triumph – which took the number of Irish wins on The European Tour to six – McGeady swept to victory following a dramatic play-off with overnight leader Joel Sjoholm of Sweden. McGeady’s round of 68 saw him finish on four under par, which had looked like being good enough until Sjoholm birdied the 17th hole. That ensured a play-off, which McGeady promptly won at the second extra hole after Sjoholm’s par putt had drifted agonisingly past the cup.

Doug McGuigan, the lone South African left standing after the halfway cut, carded a final round 74 at a sun kissed Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort in Cardiff, Wales to tie for 34th.

Final result from the SWALEC Wales Challenge:
284 Michael McGeady IRE 71-74-71-68 (second play-off hole)
284 Joel Sjoholm SWE 70-71-71-72
292 Doug McGuigan 75-67-76-74 (T34)

Missed cut (set at 150):
156 Josh Cunliffe 80-76 (T121)
157 Tyrone Ferreira 82-75 (T126)
165 Jack Kutumane 82-82 (T148) notas_de_prensa_archivo
