GOLF: PGA: Unfinished Business At Moortown
/noticias.info/ Andrew Sherborne and Williams Barnes share the clubhouse lead on day one of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship but 36 players have still to complete their first rounds following a lengthy rain-delay.
A torrential downpour at Moortown within an hour of the first group teeing off at 6.40am forced play to be suspended for two hours and 40 minutes at the Leeds course.
Kendleshire pro Sherborne set the clubhouse target of three under par 68 with a flawless round containing no bogeys and birdies on the par 5 first, sixth and 12th holes.
"The turning point came at the second hole," said Sherborne.
"I hit a horrible three wood off the tee into the rough, chipped it out sideways hit seven iron to about three feet.
"You're going to make lots of mistakes out on a day like that out there but my short game was good and I holed out well.
"It was steady, it wasn't great but I will take that every single day."
His score was matched soon after by Midland-based Barnes (RBE Golf) whose red hot putter saw him chalk up seven birdies but the tight and tree-lined Moortown course exacted revenge, claiming shots back the third, eighth, nine and 17.
"It was a good round," he said. "I drove the ball well, and putted well. I dropped a shot at 17 but it's a little bobbly around the hole so I'll blame the green for that one.
"I made bogey at the third with a wedge which was a little disappointing but I never got out of play."
Lying a shot behind the leaders are a trio of players led by Craig Goodfellow (Carlisle Driving Range), Jeremy Robinson (Sports Masters International) and James McKinnon (Irvine) who all fired 69s.
One stroke further adrift are Graeme Bell (Eaglescliffe), Cameron Clark (Moor Hall) and Duncan Muscroft (Montecchia).
Phil Hinton (Chesterton Valley) and Sean Whiffin (Bush Hill Park) resume tomorrow at three under after nine holes. notas_de_prensa_archivo
