GOLF: PGA: Goodfellow Jolly After 69
/noticias.info/ Big-hitting Craig Goodfellow (Carlisle Driving Range) reined in his prodigious driving to post a two under 69 at Moortown.
The PGA Cup player revelled in the challenge of the Ryder Cup venue to wrestle himself into contention a shot behind clubhouse leaders Will Barnes (RBE) and Andrew Sherborne (The Kendleshire).
Goodfellow, a key figure for Great Britain and Ireland in last year's epic PGA Cup clash with America in Georgia, struggled to find his game early on, dropping a shot at the 447-yard par 4 third, but eased his way back into the tournament with birdies at the seventh, 12th and 16th holes.
The 33-year-old scarcely used his driver instead plotting his way around with rescue club and long irons.
"It's a challenge, it's like a links course, you can't just smash it round with driver," he said.
"I only hit three drivers - you can't risk hitting driver too much because if you let it go you're in the cabbage."
Another north east pro Graeme Bell (Eaglescliffe), who also represented GB&I in the PGA Cup, was also in the mix, just two shots off the lead following a 70 which included birdies on each of the three par fives.
"I set myself a target of shooting successive level 73s and if I could shoot level 72s I'd be over the moon," he said.
"I played well and I have played here enough to know what to watch out for. You don't go bombing it. There's simply too much rough."
Moor Hall's Cameron Clark also fired a one under par 70 while Paul Wesselingh (Kedleston Park) put in a typical gutsy display for a level par 71.
"It's ridiculous. I came into it thinking I was playing well then I just lost it," he said.
"I've up and downed it from some ridiculous places. From 12 onwards I was okay but I'm just hitting it so short which you can't do round here.
"My swing is very fragile at the moment, and I've not really had it back since I won the Glenmuir two years ago.
"I've been working hard at it but I just don't feel comfortable when I'm hitting it.
"I'm 25 yards short off the tee, I'm mis-timing it and I can't work out what's causing it, I even had Simon Edwards giving me a lesson before I went out which sort of helped."
Play is expected to go on late with the last group not out until 6.35pm following a morning delay of two hours and 40 minutes due to a torrential downpour. notas_de_prensa_archivo
