GOLF: PGA: Levermore Relishing Royal St David’s
/noticias.info/ It has been a great season for Clacton's Jason Levermore so far, but he is hoping to emulate his success to date with victory at the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open PGA Championship, which begins on August 5 at the prestigious Royal St David's.
The 28-year-old finished inside the top 10 at the Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship in April, came runner-up at the PGA National Pro-Am regional final at King's Lynn and won the recent East Region qualifier for the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship with partner Andrew Pestell.
It has been perfect preparation for the sharp end of the season, and Levermore, who is second in the east's Order of Merit, is confident of glory in Wales.
"Yeah, I've had a pretty good season and I'm playing well," he said. "It all seems to be going pretty well at the moment.
"I've done well in the pro-ams I've played in and Andrew and I were really happy to win the SkyCaddie qualifier.
"The Welsh Open will be another good test and I'm looking forward to getting up there and playing it. I think I've got a good chance of winning.
"I've never played the course before but everyone says it's a tough course.
"The scoring there is generally not that low which suits me. I tend to play better on tough courses and shooting near par then going for five or six under around easier courses. So hopefully the course will suit me well.
"There's four of us going up from Essex on the Sunday so it'll be a good trip and we'll be able to get a few rounds of practice in before the competition starts and get to know it."
Although Levermore achieved a top-10 finish the last time he was on the north Wales coast, he is looking to do a lot better this time around.
He finished joint ninth at the Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship in Anglesey, where he admits he had "a very bad second round in the awful weather".
"It was absolutely blowing a gale so I was actually pretty happy to finish up where I did because it was so tough. Hardly anyone shot low in that.
"I was in a quite good position going into the second day but the weather was just terrible and my chances fell away.
"It'll probably be similar conditions at Royal St David's but hopefully this time I'll do better."
Levermore admits he has been inspired by Padraig Harrington's second successive victory at the Open.
"Yeah it was great watching it on TV," he said. "It really inspires you to play better and win things."
"I didn't try and qualify for the Open this year because our region's qualifying clashed with an Order of Merit event and my aim for this year is to win the Order of Merit so it made sense to play in that rather than try and qualify for Royal Birkdale where my chances were pretty slim.
"I felt I've got more chance of playing at Wentworth next year than playing at the Open."
Rob Holt, Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales, said: "Ryder Cup Wales are delighted to be supporting this event in North Wales, the second of our three PGA events in the area with the Young PGA Professional Championship in Anglesey earlier in the year. Our partnership with the PGA allows us to showcase some of the real gems that Wales has to offer and Royal St David's is a wonderful example of this with its championship links course set against a stunning backdrop." notas_de_prensa_archivo
