GOLF: PGA: Whiffin Survives Last Hole Woes
/noticias.info/ Sean Whiffin fired a 69 to share the clubhouse lead with Jeremy Robinson at two under par but was left to reflect on his tangles with the 18th hole which robbed him of three shots.
The 2004 runner up double-bogeyed the last at the end of his first round this morning and was forced to hole a 10 footer to avoid a repeat in the afternoon.
"I haven't had the best of luck with the 18th today so hopefully I can go birdie, birdie in the next two rounds," said Whiffin, who has recently moved to Herts Golf and Country Club.
"They were just bad shots, that's all but I'm happy with how I putted although I didn't hit the ball that well."
Robinson (Sports Master International) had earlier set the target with a 71 to follow up his first round 69 for a 140 total.
Andrew Sherborne (The Kendleshire), joint leader after a first round 68, made a good start to his second round, reaching the turn in 34 strokes to stand at four under for the tournament.
Also enjoying a strong second round was last year's runner up Andrew Barnett (North Wales Driving Range) who had moved to three under after 13 holes with an eagle on the seventh and birdie at the 439 yard par four 13th - one of the toughest holes on the course.
First round co-leader William Barnes (RBE Golf) fared less well, slipping off the pace with four bogeys in his outward nine, although two birdies limited the damage. The 31-year-old was one under for the championship after nine holes.
Paul Wesselingh (Kedleston Park) put his swing problems aside to reach two under par after nine.
Pro-am king David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) added a 72 to his opening round 70 to be level at the midway point, a stroke ahead of Darren Prosser, Duncan Muscroft and Paul Shunter who were tied in the clubhouse at 143. notas_de_prensa_archivo
