GOLF: PGA: Dwyer Still Standing

/noticias.info/ Ireland's John Dwyer isn't ruling out a successful defence of his Glenmuir title despite nursing a broken metatarsal.

The Ashboure pro, who rejected surgery on his left foot in order to defend the title he won 12 months ago, is showing few ill-effects after carding a second round 73 to stand at two over for the tournament.

Dwyer lies four shots adrift of clubhouse leaders Jeremy Robinson and Sean Whiffin but insisted the broken bone in his foot, which forced him to pull out of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in May, wouldn't hamper his chances.

"I was looking at surgery and would have been out for six to eight weeks which was not an option at this time of the year so basically got a steroid injection which will get me three months," he said.

"It's not stopping me from doing anything but I can feel it after I've played. Shouldn't be a problem but will see how it is after five days here."

The three time PGA Cup player remains in the fray at Moortown despite an erratic display of driving which cost him six bogeys.

"I just haven't been driving the ball well which is the strongest part of my game and my putter's been keeping me in it," he said.

"I'm lacking confidence with my driver but here you've got to stand up and commit to the tee shot, it's the kind of course where if you miss the fairway then you're pretty much looking at bogey unless you make a very good up and down.

"I was hitting everywhere - in the trees, rough but there was a lot of good stuff in there but the bad is bad and I've just got to get something together and tidy up because I'm putting nicely even though the greens are slow and I generally put better on fast greens."

Dwyer admits returning to the championship final has rekindled happy memories from last year but is putting them to one side as he contemplates a move up the leaderboard.

"I arrived on Monday morning and got a bit of a buzz with memories of last year but you've got to kind of put that to one side," he said.

"The standard this year looks very good and it's going to be a good winner who ever comes out on top - there's an awful lot of quality players in there from the regions.

"Realistically I'm going to have to shoot well under par into the 60s to give myself a chance of going into the last day.

"As long as you're under par, you're going to be in contention but you can't relax, somebody might have two or three shot lead but you can't let up anywhere."

Dwyer's playing partner Tony Nash, champion in 2004, is another carrying an injury, this time to his back. The Porthpean pro managed a 74 but a triple bogey at the 188 yard par 3 17th proved expensive.

"I haven't managed to complete one full swing and have been hitting some pretty funny looking shots," admitted Nash.

Meanwhile Phil Hinton suffered a reaction to his first round 69 by imploding with a double bogey and four bogeys in the outward nine of his second round to stand at three over for the tournament.

Leeds-born Duncan Muscroft added a 73 to his first round 70 to sit at one over par alongside Darren Prosser (Halfpenny Green) who was also on 143 after a 72 and 71.

"I ripped it but just didn't hole a thing," said Muscroft. notas_de_prensa_archivo
