GOLF: ASIAN TOUR: HISTORY-MAKER LAM HOPES TO CONQUER WORLDWIDE SELANGOR MASTERS

/noticias.info/ Singapore’s history-maker Lam Chih Bing will be eager to hunt down a first Asian Tour victory when he tees off at the Worldwide Selangor Masters next week.

The big-hitting Lam played his way into golf’s annals when he became the first Singaporean to play in four rounds at the British Open at Royal Birkdale two weeks ago and he is hoping to extend his rich vein of form.

Lam’s confidence will high when he arrives at Seri Selangor Golf Club for the RM1 million (US$310,000) tournament from August 6 to 9 as it was the venue where he and compatriot Mardan Mamat claimed victory in the World Cup Qualifier in 2006.

The Singaporean duo will be amongst the contenders at the Worldwide Selangor Masters where other leading stars include Thai duo Thongchai Jaidee and Thaworn Wiratchant, Chinese Taipei veteran Lu Wen-teh and in-form compatriot Lin Wen-tang, Filipinos Juvic Pagunsan and Artemio Murakami.

The memories of his triumph at Seri Selangor are still fresh in the mind of the 31-year-old Lam and he hopes for a similar ending.

“I certainly enjoyed playing at Seri Selangor during the World Cup Qualifier. It’s a very challenging test of golf and the greens are very tricky due to the big slopes that they have on the putting surfaces,” said Lam.

“We won the World Cup qualifier there, so I’ve had some success at this golf course and hopefully I can repeat my form and win the tournament,” added Lam.

Winning a first Asian Tour title has been a long wait for Lam, who turned professional in 1999. But since working with a new coach in Singapore, he has shown some good form, winning four smaller events in India, Indonesia and Singapore before his British Open exploits.

“With my British Open experience, I will take all the positives from that and build on it. It is my goal to win an Asian Tour title this season and I’m looking forward to playing in the Worldwide Selangor Masters. I feel that I can only become better from that experience as I learned so much from it,” he added.

Mardan, who is a two-time winner on the Asian Tour, is ready to start the second half of the season on a strong note at the Worldwide Selangor Masters, which was inaugurated as a domestic event last year and making its debut on the Asian Tour Schedule.

“It’s good to return to a golf course which I’ve won before with Lam in 2006. I enjoyed the challenge at Seri Selangor and still remember it well. I like the layout but I will have to watch out for the tricky greens. It is a good venue and I’m eager to get underway,” said Mardan.
