EVERTON FC: BOSS: COMPETITION NEEDED

/noticias.info/ David Moyes conceded there needs to be more competition for places in his squad after seeing Everton lose 2-0 at Chicago Fire.

The Toffees boss named just five players on the bench for the first game of this year’s tour to America and goals in either half saw the Toffees slip to a disappointing defeat.

Speaking after the game Moyes paid credit to the young players who have filled in during pre-season, but acknowledge new faces are a necessity.

“We can’t hide the fact that we need new players at Everton,” he told evertonTV. “Everybody knows it, I know it, the players know it – we have to get five or six players in before the season starts.

“It’s okay getting fit, but you’ve got to be able to play better the moment there’s not enough competition for the players to realise that if they play poorly they won’t be selected.”

Although Moyes was disappointed with his side’s performance he suggested the 2-0 scoreline flattered the MLS side.

Indeed, the result may have hinged on a Yakubu penalty claim four minutes before the break. The Nigerian was brought down when through on goal but referee Landis Wiley waved away his protests.

Less than sixty seconds later Chris Wolfe put Fire in front. Moyes said Yakubu would not have dived.

“We never like losing,” he said. “And I don’t think we played well enough on the night. It was maybe a little bit harsh on us though. We could have had a penalty kick and they went up the other end and scored. Going into half time we could have been 1-0 up and instead they were. That may have changed things.

“Yak wouldn’t dive. The boy fell him on him and it was a penalty kick. But these things happen. You’re always going to get bad decisions and you’ve just got to get on with it.”

The game ended on a sour note as James Vaughan received his marching orders in injury time for a dangerous sliding challenge on Daniel Woolard.

Moyes was disappointed with his striker, saying the tackle was reckless and the red card deserved.

“It was a terrible tackle from James Vaughan. I’ve told him and I just won’t have that. He’s apologised but it’s the player he made the tackle on he should be apologising to.” notas_de_prensa_archivo
