IRAQ: Troops Uncover Huge Weapons Cache

Baghdad, Iraq — In eight separate locations near the Iraqi town of Latifiyah, Task Force Baghdad troops and Iraqi Army Soldiers uncovered a huge cache of weapons, munitions and explosives on Jan. 23.

The cache discovery operation was led by the 1st Cavalry Division’s 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

“This massive find continues to yield ammunition and weapons systems, much of which was likely to be used against Iraqi civilians,” said Lt. Col. James Hutton, chief spokesman for the task force and the 1st Cavalry Division.

Thousands of small arms ammunition and hundreds of artillery, anti-aircraft and mortar rounds were uncovered west of the north Babil town. Hutton said the task force continues to uncover more munitions in the area, about 35 miles south of the Iraqi capital, putting a dent in any violent plans laid by insurgents.

“The insurgent is finding it harder to cache weapons for later use,” he said. “We are disrupting his plans, lessening his ability to conduct continuing operations, and pressuring him as he attempts to gather arms for impending attacks.”
